About Us

Background

Sheremeta Compost Consulting has been in the composting industry for over 35 years. It's Founder, Oley Sheremeta started as the Technical Manager for an 1100 tpd composting facility in Florida. While there, he managed all aspects of the facility's compost process which included a dirty MRF, aerated turned windrows and an on-site testing laboratory. He also joined the United States Composting Council (USCC) and was on the development team for early Council materials such as the Compost Facility Operating Guide and the TMECC.

His next position was Resource Recovery Manager at a 125 tpd facility with a recycling drop off center, dirty MRF and hybrid composting system (rotary vessel followed by aerated agitated bays) in Washington state. While there, Oley became heavily involved in the Washington Organic Recycling Council (WORC) serving as Co-President, President and Education Committee Chair. At the same time, he became a Board Member of the USCC.

Notable projects at this time included working with Jeff Gage at WORC to create the nations first 40-hour compost operator training and certification program. In addition, Oley was the Full Scale Pilot (On-Site) project manager for the ASTM-ISR biodegradable polymers study which was the first study of its kind to determine the compostability of biodegradable bags in a full scale compost system.

The next step for Oley was to start his own consulting business, Sheremeta Environmental Consultants (SEC). Initial clients retained him to join the design team for the construction and start-up of a 1700 tpd facility processing RMSW and biosolids utilizing rotary drums and aerated agitated bays. A large municipality then requested two pre-purchase reviews for the same facility. During this period, Oley became the first person to serve on both the United States Composting Council Board and the Board of the Composting Council of Canada.

Another SEC client retained services to prepare two North American market surveys for a European technology utilizing membrane covered aerated static piles. This was followed by becoming the Exclusive North American Sales Representative for the GORE(TM) Cover System from 2000-2006.

Most recently, Oley spearheaded an effort to form the Arizona Composting Council (AZCC) which incorporated in 2023 as a 501C6 to promote organics management and composting in Arizona. Thanks to an incredibly strong executive committee, board and founding sponsors, the AZCC became the 16th State Chapter of the USCC.

In total, Sheremeta Compost Consulting has provided services to over 100 facilities in North America, Europe and Asia. Contact us today to leverage that experience to assist your project team.
